The origins of baccarat can be traced back to an Italian Felix Falguerein, who is said to have created the game in the late 14th century. By the 15th century returning soldiers of Charles VIII brought the game back to France where its popularity blossomed.
Although the game did make its way to the United States in 19th century, most American gamblers preferred blackjack. It took a trip to Cuba, where it was renamed Punta Banco for the game to gain popularity in the US by the 1950s.
The game of baccarat is played with two hands, the bank and the player. The aim of the game is to predict and bet on which 2-card hand will equal or be closest to 9. Two-card hand totals are calculated with face cards and 10s counting as 0, 1 to 9 as their face value and aces as 1. Should a hand total equal 10 or greater, then the left digit is dropped and the right become the hand’s total. A third card is drawn only if a hand total is less than 5.
During betting, a player can predict that either the player or the bank will have a total closer or equal to 9 or that the hand totals will be the same (a tie).
